Barkhan, was given the status of an independent district on 31 December 1991. Presently, there is one sub-division, one tehsil and one sub-tehsil in the district. The district is controlled by a Deputy Commissioner and he is assisted by one Assistant Commissioner, one Tehsildar and two Naib-Tehsildars. One Deputy Superintendent of Police is also posted in the district headquarters Barkhan.
