Non Government Organisations Barkhan

 

The only NGO working in Barkhan district worth mentioning is the Balochistan Rural Support Programme (BRSP). BRSP is the largest NGO active in Balochistan and has a project running in Barkhan in the following sectors:

 

1) Agriculture

2) Livestock

3) Agro-Forestry

4) Credit Programme

5) Community Development Schemes

6) Health Education

7) Non-formal Education

8) Marketing

 

In agriculture, they provide training to village specialists, who subsequently provide training to the rural people of the area. The training comprises demonstrations as well as experiments. In these demonstration and experiments, techniques are shown on how to increase production, use of new varieties of seeds, orchard management, pruning, irrigation methods, plant protection, pesticide use, tree nurseries and post harvest techniques.

 

In the field of forestry they teach how to improve the range lands, about forest tree plantation and also motivate people to grow more trees by providing them trees from Punjab at concessionary rates.

 

In the livestock sector they demonstrate how to increase production through modern techniques. Beside, they also demonstrate through experiment how goat and sheep fattening techniques can be applied. Similarly, animal health care techniques and improvements in poultry farming are taught through demonstration and experiments. In addition, they introduce artificial insemination.

 

BRSP also assist in marketing by helping farmers to create linkages with the nearest big markets and assist in introducing the produce on the market. They provide information on market trends. BRSP also provides credit for income generating activities. The loans vary from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 300,000.

 

BRSP supports community development schemes. These schemes may pertain to agriculture or any other sector and are all executed on self-help basis. For example, facilities are provided for health education, which include basic health training, midwifery, and hygiene related matters. BRSP also provides non-formal education in places where no schools are present. Teachers are provided stipends amounting from Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,000 per month. They also provide free books.
