Jhall Magsi in comparison to Balochistan
The data and other information provided so far in this District Profile, reflected the situation in Jhall Magsi district itself.
It was not or hardly related to the situation in other districts or to that of Balochistan as a whole. To add that perspective, 32 indicators have been selected on each of which the 26 districts can be compared. These indicators, and others, can be found on the next two pages. The relative position of Jhall Magsi is given in the diagram on the third page. It is a bottom-up ranking: position nr. 1 means the lowest score on the indicator concerned, while position nr. 26 means the highest score. An overall ranking of districts is not given, because that would require to attach a certain weight to every indicator.
As far as Jhall Magsi district is concerned, the following observations can be made:
- Area-wise, Jhall Magsi is a comparatively small district; based on the projections of NIPS it has the second smallest population, after Ziarat. The density of population is one and a half times that of the province as a whole, while the estimated population growth is a little below average.
- Although Jhall Magsi scores relatively high in cultivated area, its actual agricultural production and the value of production per capita is below average. The value of the agricultural production per hectare is even among the lowest in the province.
Data are however not very reliable since no separate statistics for the district has been kept yet and data have to be extrapolated from the combined figures of Jhall Magsi and Bolan.
- Based on the few data available regarding the livestock sector and on extrapolation of data of the old Kachhi district (which was bifurcated into Jhall Magsi and Bolan) one might conclude that the sector has scope for expansion because the available pasture area per livestock unit is one of the largest in Balochistan.
- As far as enrollment in primary education is concerned, the district takes a middle position in the rankings as far as girls is concerned and scores considerably higher for boys. This indicates a gender imbalance: for nearly every four boys, only one girl goes to school. The pupil/teacher ratio is among the lowest in the province for boys (position nr. 6) and a bit higher for girls (position nr. 10).
- Especially the male/female ratio for paramedical staff, the highest in Balochistan, reflects the limitations women face with regard to access to proper health care. The population per doctor is comparatively high; the population per bed scores somewhat better but still high.
- Although there is water in abundance all over the district, the coverage of the population with regard to supply of potable water is one of the worst in Balochistan.
- With the 133 km. of metalled road and the relative small size, Jhall Magsi takes a high position with regard to the density of metalled roads, while the density of shingle roads gives the district a position in the middle.
