Role, position and status of Women Jhall Magsi

Women in the district Jhall Magsi only play a role on household level. They clean the house and prepare the food. They fetch water and do the washing. They attend all kind of social gatherings, like marriages, funerals, etc. The role of women in the economy and labour is also significant, although it is indirect because they work as a helping hand to the male members of the family. They sometimes go to the field with the meal for the male members, when they are cropping. They abide with them on the fields and stay there to collect the falling crop. They raise chickens for both household consumption and for sale. They milk the goats. Besides they do embroidery work on male caps (topi) and female dresses, which are sold in the shops, through which they may earn some income.

Women are free to move even in the territory of an enemy party, because according to tribal custom, no-one can harm them. The woman is considered as a sister (Nayani), therefore, she is used as a Marih. Whenever she visits the house of a conflicting party to make an attempt to resolve a feud, she is always treated with respect. A piece of cloth or some money is presented to her as a token of respect. Similarly, the mother of a Nawab or Sardar carries more respect then the Nawab, Sardar or Mutbar himself. Complaints against the Sardars or Mutbar are presented before the mother or the elder woman of the family, because she is considered to be the mother of the tribe or the branch of the tribe.
