Kalat in comparison to Balochistan
The data and other information profiled in this District Profile up to now were focused on the situation in Kalat district itself. Not much attention was paid to the relation with the situation in other districts or in Balochistan as a whole. To have that angle also, 32 indicators were selected on which the districts can be compared. These indicators cover a whole spectrum of subjects (area, population, agriculture, livestock, social sectors, roads); they, and other indicators, can be found in the table on the next two pages. Each district can be ranked on each of the indicators. The relative position of Kalat district is given in the diagram on the third page. It is a bottom-up ranking: position nr. 1 means the lowest score on that indicator, position nr. 26 means the highest score. An overall ranking of the districts is not given, since that would require to attach a certain weight to each of the indicators.
- With its area of 6,621 square kilometer, Kalat takes a position just below the middle, while the position on population is above the middle. The district is consequently relatively densely populated. Its population growth rate is comparatively low.
- All the indicators related to agriculture score upper middle rankings. The relatively higher positions on agriculture production, fruit production and production value, point to a relatively good productivity and to the production of high value crops.
- Although there are no district specific data on livestock, the impression exists that there is a relatively high density of livestock, both per capita as area wise. The available pasture per livestock unit is comparatively low, which means that there is not much scope for expansion of this sector, with a view on the situation in other districts.
- Enrolment figures in primary education for both boys and girls are relatively low. The girls / teachers ratio is very high (fourth from the top), while that for boys is just below the middle.
- The district is relatively well off as far as the road infrastructure is concerned. It takes the third highest ranking on shingle roads and scores well above the middle on metalled roads. The indicators is road density: length of the roads per square kilometre.
