Labour Force Kalat

According to the census of 1981 the labour force (those working and looking for work) constituted 28.5 percent of the total population.

The male and female labour force participation ratio was 55.8 and 0.8% respectively. The labour force participation ratio for urban and rural areas was 22.5 and 28.5% respectively. Unfortunately the female population in the rural areas is engaged all the time in domestic activities which are not recorded. They also assist the male members of the family in sowing and harvesting the crops but they do not receive any financial reward for that.

The unemployment ratio was 2.6% in urban areas and 1.8% in rural areas. The male and female unemployment ratio was 1.6% and 19.2% respectively. The major occupations in the area are agriculture, animal husbandry, poultry, and forestry (81% of the workforce). The other important sectors of economic activities are transportation, trade, and social and personal services. Mining is also an important sector, though only a few persons are working in this sector.

According to the latest available information for 1993-94, which is based on a labour survey by the Directorate of Labour, Government of Balochistan, the total number of employees in the private sector was 1,144 out of them 1,065 (93.1%) were males. The proportion of the child workers was 6.9%. It is interesting to note that the number of females employed in the private sector is zero.
