Role of Women Kalat
Kalat is a male dominated tribal society. Economic and social power rests with the men. Chiefs and tribal heads are always men. The role of women in community life is negligible. They are rarely involved in social activities. Their activities revolve around domestic affairs, e.g. raising children, cooking food and managing household activities. This situation is partly due to the lack of education an the social and cultural set-up In which they are born and raised. The other reason may be the concept of division of responsibilities between men and women in Islam. Men are supposed to earn for the family, while women have the duty to manage the household according to religious teachings and tribal tradition. Therefore, women do not find opportunities to take part in community activities.
As a result of the above mentioned situation, women are not working in the offices, with the exception of a few women employed in the health and education sectors. Women are not involved in economic activities, therefore, their social status is not equal to that of men. They are not socially independent, partly because they are not economically independent.
