Sports Kalat

Introduction

The sports activities in the area fall in two categories. In the first category, sports can be included that are based on local and traditional customs, such as wrestling, tug-of-war, stone-throwing, Balochi folk dance etc. The second category includes relatively modern sports e.g. volleyball, football, hockey, cricket, table tennis, badminton, chess, playing cards and scrabble, which are also quite common. Table tennis, badminton, chess, playing cards and scrabble are very popular among government servants, while football, volleyball, tug of war, and stone throwing are popular among the labour class and the population of rural areas.

At school and college level students play cricket, hockey and football and other games. Football is a very popular game in the area. The people who do not play themselves, watch the game with keen interest. An officers club is also functioning at Kalat and it provides variety of sports activities to its members. To pass the leisure time, people also watch T.V in the restaurants and hotels.

GO/NGO/Private Enterprise, etc. involvement in Sports Development

Conclusion and major Development Issues

The people of the district take great interest in sports and other recreational activities, but unfortunately there are not enough opportunities for most of them to fulfil their desire.

The sports activities are limited to school and college level. The officers club has some sports activities but these are limited only to officers. NGOs also launch some sports programme on religious and national occasions. The sports activities can be enhanced by involving NGOs and CBOs ( Community Based Organization).

There are one big stadium and 3 playgrounds in Kalat. Playgrounds are also present in Sorab, Johan, Mangocher and Gazg. Local administration needs to take interest in the sports sector. They can persuade some of the NGOs to extend their co-operation in arranging various sports events and tournaments. The local administration can play a pivotal role in organizing and co-ordinating sport activities in various parts of the district.
