Child Labour Loralai

Driving a Cart in Winter.

Now exact information on the extend of child labour is available. The magnitude and nature of child labour varies between urban and rural areas. In rural areas the absence of education opportunities leaves the children with no alternatives but to participate in the workforce at an early age. In rural areas they perform tasks like grazing livestock, weeding and harvesting. Furthermore children assist in fetching water (particularly girls) and fire wood. Girls are involved at an early age in the daily routine of domestic work like preparation of meals, cleaning of the compound and caring for the younger children during their mother’s pregnancy and child birth. They remain at home and do all the works. Boys in urban areas work in hotels, are apprentices in auto mobiles workshops, tailoring shops, carpentry and welder shops and engineering works. The children join most of these jobs as apprentice so that in due time they will be able to run their own shops. The boys receive lower salaries in these establishments as employers exploit this situation to treat them as trainees. At the same time the above mentioned activities prevent children from receiving proper education.
