Loralai, Duki and Sinjavi are the only towns in the district. Out of the total population 8.18% (1981) was living in urban areas. There were 28,813 houses in the district during 1981 census period, which must have increased by now.
Tenure
80% of the housing units were owner occupied, 16% were rented and 4% were rent free houses in the district.

Construction Material
Most of the houses are made of mud and unbaked bricks (2/3 of the total housing units). About 17% of the houses was constructed using baked bricks / stones and cement for both the houses and outer walls; 86% of the housing units had used girders / beams and baked bricks for the construction of the roofs. The use of RCC/RBC in the construction of roofs was very un-common. Nowadays more RCC/RBC houses are being built in urban areas of the district.
Sources of energy
The main sources of energy are kerosene oil, electricity, wood and LPG. For lighting purposes electricity and kerosene oil is mostly used, for cooking purposes wood/bushes, LPG, and dung cake.
In urban areas mostly electricity and LPG is used, whereas in rural area where electricity is not available kerosene oil, wood/bushes and dung cake are used.
Housing Characteristics
According to the 1981 census report, 82% of the housing units consisted of one to 3 rooms. The percentage of single room housing units was 33%. Crowding figures in terms of persons per room and per housing unit, were 3 and 8 respectively. Separate kitchen/bathrooms and latrine facilities were available to 2/3 of the housing units, while the percentages of housing units having no such facilities at all were 35, 33 and 23 respectively.
Nowadays almost 80% of the households include bathroom, kitchen and latrines in urban areas, while hardly 5% have these facilities in rural areas.
Drinking Water and Sanitation
The sources of drinking water are tube wells, karezes, wells, springs and hand pumps. The PHE and Local Government Departments are responsible for supplying potable water to the population. Twenty water supply schemes have been commissioned by the PHE Department to supply water to 71,950 beneficiaries. Furthermore, 26 wells have been dug to supply water to 58,600 people. Thus little over 20% of the total population is supplied with potable water by the government. The rest of the people manage their water supply from tube wells, karezes, springs, wells and ponds.
There are no sanitation facilities in rural areas, except a few latrines constructed by the government under the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Scheme. The coverage of sanitation in urban areas includes the disposal of solid waste and cleaning of streets etc.
