The Family Loralai

The joint family system is prevailing in the district. However, the trend in the urban areas is towards nuclear family. The reason for this is economic independence; in general the people are better educated; many are in government service and consequently living usually in the government quarters which do not have the space for joint families. However, economic compromises and cultural values may restrain them from adopting the nuclear family system. The father is usually the head of the family which passes on to his eldest son after his death. If a male member of the joint family is employed outside, he becomes responsible for the wellbeing of the family. Old parents and disabled members of the family are responsible for looking after the children. The family is still an important element in the social institution; it works as a social security during un-employment, financial crises and enforces social liabilities very effectively by means of socialization. It is a big support during conflict and a platform for social interaction.
